Help How do I back up a Samsung Galaxy S3

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone and I will soon be upgrading to the S5. About three months ago I had a replacement Samsung S3 as my original one was faulty. I used to back my phone up regularly to Samsung kies, but when I received my replacement phone, I realised what a totally useless piece of software Samsung Kies is. I have about 2 1/2 thousand contacts and Samsung kies managed to put only 17 contacts back onto my replacement phone, thankfully when I logged into my Google account I believe the rest of my contacts were restored!

When I had a BlackBerry mobile phone, their backup software was excellent, it saved everything, including apps, text messages, the lot! So my question is, surely there is a piece of software that totally backs up your mobile phone?!

All help is appreciated, thank you for reading!

Some stuff can be backed up by going to: Settings > Backup and restore and enabling 'Backup my data' and 'Automatic restore'.

More complete backups can be done using apps like Helium or MyBackup Pro. Even more can be backed up with Titanium Backup, but it requires a rooted phone. Total, complete backup including the OS is called a nandroid backup and also requires a rooted phone.

Thank you very much for your reply, I will try one of the apps that you have suggested. The rooted phone sounds like it could be slightly complicated! Once again thank you for your help.
