How do I delete unwanted apps?

Does anyone know how to delete unwanted apps that are preloaded on the phone?

Phone: HTC Thunderbolt
Carrier: Verizon

I was trying to delete some of the preloaded JPG images on my phone and couldn't do it as they are marked as read-only.
I'm assuming that the only way to do it is to root your phone.

That sounds like a start, but how can I access the root? With a third party app?
