Help How do I find and delete an orphaned app?

tolsen64

Lurker
I installed an app quite a while back. The app has since been removed from the play store and the server which the app used no longer exists. The app does not appear in the list when I go into app management so there is no option to uninstall it. I've tried looking for it in the file manager but no luck there. Any suggestions?

If the app was pulled from Play and determined to be malicious, it may have been automatically removed from your device. I remember chatter about this functinality way back when play was called the Android Market, and IIRC it was ONLY for malicious apps. I don't know how that has evolved over the last 7-9 years, but it sounds like what you expeerienced.

If you do not see the app in your list of installed apps it is gone for good.
Any file manager will only show folders the app created, which you can delete if necessary

No. This app was part of an Alternate Reality Game (ARG) for a game called No Man's Sky. The ARG ended a year ago and I never uninstalled the app because it still worked. I can still open the app and it shows
a splash screen and then an error.

If the app is in you app drawer then you can probably long press on the app and choose to uninstall it from there. I don't know why it wouldn't show in your app list though.

App Drawer? Never heard of that. When I long-press on it, it just allows me to move it to a different screen or into a group. And I would expect to find it in my apps list between MusicFX and Netflix.

The app drawer should open when you tap the center button on your dock. On your screenshot it should be the grey circle with 6 white dots between the phone and messenger icons on your dock.

Ok, so it's not in the app drawer. So here's a question, if I drag the shortcut icon up to the trash, will that just delete the icon? Or will it delete the file/folder it points to?

Depends on the phone type / launcher. Can you provide that info? Some launchers may allow you to hide apps in the app drawer. Are you using Nova or another 3rd party launcher?

Here's my suggestion:

First from home screen(which is the window you took a picture of)..press apps(which is the six dots in the lower middle)..the Myrla Uplink app should be the there too..then press and hold it(don't let it go)..then push it to the top of your window..at this point you should see a recycle bin on top of your window..push your malicious app(that you should be still holding it)..then realise
your finger on top of the trash can..it will be gone for good!!

That's that.
