how do i garden in sims 3?

I know I have to upgrade the house in build mode, but I touch a wall or floor... I can just change the color. I touch the ground outside... nothing. I have seeds and fertilizer. What am I missing?

I've got an upgraded house, watering can, seeds, fertilizer, and a wish to grow something. I've clicked everywhere and searched for directions with no luck. What am I not understanding about this?

Finally got it thanks to someone on another forum.

Click on the bottom of one of the stakes which will bring up the options for gardening. You can grow a plant at each stake.

The stakes are to the left of your upgraded house
