I have a Samsung 4S that I just bought. There is no sound at all that I can hear.

Verify that you have sound configured properly as per the user manual, page 131 (page 138 in PDF navigation). Also, swipe down the notification bar and verify that "Sound" is illuminated as shown below (not "Vibrate" or "Mute").
The order may be different on your phone. Just swipe to the left to see them all, or pull down the notification bar with 2 fingers instead of one.
