how do i sync my galaxy s2?

i've connected my galaxy s2 to my computer with the cord but neither phone or computer recognizes the connection has been made. the phone begins to charge however when i go into the "my computer" tab on my computer the phone does not show up with the other devices... how do i get it to pop up so i can click and drag music onto my phone???
