Got the wife an android phone... so how do I transfer files to it wirelessly? For example I use contacts to sdcard app. Want to transfer my saved contacts to her sd card, then import them.

Download an app called Mr Number. This app allows you to transfer contacts by csv files. It's not hard to use I used it to transfer all of my contacts from my iPhone to my gmail account....It may be a little different in your situation being that you are going from phone to phone but I'm sure with Mr. Number there is a way to do it.

If you want to access files wirelessly from your PC you there are three choices that I know of Astro file manager, Estrongs file manager and Homepipe. Homepipe is a kind of clould service while eStrongs and Astro will give you access to your Shared drives via wi-fi. Hope this helps :)

There are also various plug ins for Astro if you use that. You can search Astro in the market to see what is available. For instance I saw a Bluetooth one if your PC/laptop has bluetooth if you want to use this method. I haven't used it or the others yet but just saw them a bit ago and plan to test them out when I have some time probably next week.

I've found plenty of apps and tips on PC to android, but I'm looking for Android to Android.

Why can't one mobile phone send files to another?

I'd like to see a wifi walky talky program, where phones could talk without using cell towers.

I'd like the ability to send documents, images, files, etc to my wife's phone from my phone, without having to fire up the laptop or use my home network.

I tried shiFTP, but I couldn't get it to acknowledge the other phone and there didn't seem to be any instructions.

I know I could always pop out my mini SD and put it in the other phone.
