How do I upgrade my Android?

I recently purchased the ZTE MERIT from strait talk. It came with Android 2.3.5 I seen that there are more recent versions of Android out there. How do I upgrade to a more recent version? I tried calling strait talk, but they were about as dumb as the wal-mart employees.
