how do ichange message alert to to own tone

Hi this is prob a sill question but how do i change my message alert tone (sms) on my samsung galaxt s GT-19000 to my own tone i have read in internet to make my own file tried that and didnt work. any help id be gratefull or any links to do it .

Go to your messaging app, hit menu-settings, and change the notification sound.

At first, you should create a folder which named "Ringtones" and put your ringtone into this folder, then go to your message and hit setting, change the notification sound, after that you can find your ringtone and select it.
