How do you Keep Data Charges low? WiFi Only, NO cell 3G data

As a new user trying to defeat the Cell company trying to shove as much data as possible thru their cell tower at me to bloat my cell bill, I find I need to use 4 free apps across the top on my home page, to keep my android phone hooked to my home WiFi, and OFF the cell tower data bill charges as much as possible.

APN OnOff (CurveFish) - to keep MMS enabled (texts)

APNdroid (Martin Adamek) to CLEARLY show that Cell tower access is ON/OFF (green/Red)

WiFi OnOff Widget (CurveFish) to CLEARLY show WiFi is On/Off on the desktop

KeepWiFi (BK Mobility) to CLEARLY show WiFi is on in the desktop top bar (BK Mobility).

How do you pros handle this $$$ OUCH! problem?
 
I personally rooted my phone and am using Droidwall. I allow all apps to use internet when wifi is connected, and I only allow certain programs (SMS, browser, maps) when I have 3g on.

I also use tasker to automate my wifi connections.
 
I only switch the internet on when i need to.
In the morning turn the net on, and all the various downloads are done, i switch off.
The service providers have a nick for milking the system.
Most of my stuff is done on a pc so why have the mobile network on then.
 
yep, I plan to Root, just not knowing enough to take the plunge yet.

I use Pandora. If you step away from the Wifi, you will be hit with 40 megs/hour Cell data use $$$.

I look forward to rooting! Seems easy, yet, if there is one problem, it could burn hours of my time, & leave me Droidless (shiver me timbers)

Your phone prefers to use Wifi instead of 3G. If it is connected to Wifi, the 3G will not be used until you disconnect from the Wifi (turn wifi off or go too far away and lose the signal).


APNDroid will lock your 3G data to off, and it also has an option to allow SMS or not.

I don't see why you need the other 3 apps at all.


If you are using Pandora on Wifi, and you have used APNDroid to turn off the 3G connection, when you walk away from the Wifi you will lose data connection and Pandora cannot continue playing.
 
I only connect with WIFI when I wake up on the morning and go back to home on the night. And most of time, I will not data charge when I'm working.
 
oh I just have to do it.........I control my data usage by using Sprint. Unlimited data plan. My bill is the same every month no matter how much data I use.

...or the WiFi sleep policy kicks in.
