How do you see the smartphone landscape in 5 years?

Five years ago, Blackberry ruled smart phones, with Palm a secondary player. Nokia ruled dumb phones, Motorola had a hit with Razr.

Today, Android and Apple rule the smartphone world, Blackberry is declining in third, and Microsoft is struggling to gain presence.

Where do you see things five years from now?

It honestly depends on how Apple's patent play out, IMO. They went after HTC, and won on two patent cases. We will have to see how the courts decide, and then whether HTC (and maybe other companies) decide to settle.

I see no one using smartphones anymore because all of the infrastructure would be destroyed when the world ends in 2012. :p

Seriously, I have no idea. I have seen articles in various tech web sites predicting what the landscape will be like in the future. If those articles aren't very good at predicting what tech trends will be like in 5 years, what chance do I have? The only thing I am fairly confident about is that Symbian will be practically gone.

lol@ the last 2 comments.

I see WP7 having more of a presence. As long as I can remember its always been 3 in the spotlight. With RIM declining, its gonna be Android, WP7 and the iPhone... especially if/when RIM fades out or gets bought out..

Wow....I just realized I totally forgot about WebOS...even tho I mentioned it always being 3 in the spotlight before...lol

Well...I can see a big 3 and probably the other 2 if the other 2 can survive toward the bottom.

You won't need a smartphone. There will be a chip implanted into everyone's brain, running Android version Zingers, this will be controlled directly by Google's self-aware servers. There will be no Apple, because Google will buy them out and close the business down.

depends on the patent war, which to be honest I find way more interesting than who will be the major smartphone players

I have no idea. It will be much of the same for a while, with slight spec improvements (resolution, screen size, CPU, RAM etc) then some random innovation will come along that could be absolutely anything as far as I can tell ;)

With WP7 buying Nokia, iPhone essentially gaining in small portions year on year and Android on every other phone, that pretty much lays out the foundation of smartphones over the next 5 years. RIM is in freefall and will fall to less than 1% of the Market.

MS next move is the new OS on everything. Phones, PCs, Game devices, Tablets.

Hack one - you hack 'em all. Easy to grab all info, eventually

Where do you see anything in 5 years? If you go back five years and think about what you thought the world would be like five years in the future from then, do you think you would have imagined all that is going on now?

^Very true. If this question was asked 5 years ago...Android and the iPhone probably wouldnt even be in the discussion.

When you think about that.....thats amazing.
