Open the Play Store, tap on the hamburger bar and scroll down to Settings, under General tap on Auto-update apps then either choose Do not auto-update apps or Auto update apps over Wi-Fi only.
Ask Sprint, it's their device. I believe forced updates can be a problem with US carrier version, locked and subsidized phones, and no way to stop it apparently. Apart from rooting, changing ROM etc.
