how does android manage its tasks on single core devices

I'm doing my thesis on android devices and I would like to know how does android's system manage tasks in single core devices and in multi core devices. I know honeycomb was the first version that introduced android to multi core devices (tablets), and ICS did to phones.
What type of scheduling does it use in order to save the battery life?
