How does google voice work?

How does the voicemail work the phone? It says i have to call this number to configure my phone but everytime i call it, the number never works.

Also, why do i get a text back in my regular inbox when a person responds to my google voice text?

Not sure of the first part. What message do you get?

As for the 2nd part, go into your GV settings (on the web) and edit settings for your cell and uncheck receive text messages on this phone.

When you use the GV app, the text messages come through as data into your GV app.

Anyways the first thing is this...are you talking about voicemail for your google voice number, or the voicemail forwarding to your gvoice mail?
