How does Printer Share work?

CharlesLewis

I'm looking for a way to print to a wireless printer that is not connected to a computer. The printer is, of course, wirelessly connected to the network, but right now I can print only if the computer is on, which makes it rather pointless, since I can always email myself a document and then print it directly from the computer.

I have read a bit about Printer Share, but I can't determine from the posts here or from the web site if it would work the way I am describing. Heck, I don't even know if it's theoretically possible to do what I want.

Can anyone help?

For HP printers:
This new 'ePrint' printers of HP have their own eMail address.
The app at the phone sends your doc to the HP server and the server sends your doc like an eMail to the ePrint printer ... voila :)

But note, so far HP has only an app for the iPhone, but there is hope ...

Looks as if Apple has the printers locked up for the moment. From my research, I gather that the iPad (and I assume iPhone as well) can print to a large number of printers, but right now Cloud Print is all that is available for Android.

Try cloud print beta from the market. You add a printer to the cloud from website them use the app to print directly to it.

HP is going to support this with WebOS. It's doubtful IMO that they'll continue much support for iOS and/or Android. They're really trying to push WebOS.

Does the computer wirelessly connected need to be on for printing to occur? In other words, could I add the printer to the cloud and then turn the computer off until I needed it for some advanced work?

I don't know that for sure but I would think that it does need to be on. I'm pretty sure it only needs to be on through, not necessarily on with a specific program open or running. We have or desktop on almost all the time but its usually at screen saver.
