Help How does Tethering work on Samsung Indulge?

Before I want to get help from this, I've been using Android for awhile (knows rooting and custom roms) but now I wonder what does "Tethering means and how does it work on my phone"? i know a lil bit about using the tether for wifi hotspots to use it for Wifi through the phone..

can someone tell me how to Tether using Samsung Indulge (R190) thanks you
