Help How to activate G1 with other SIM card

I bought the phone and it was activated by one of my friend in US with his T-mobile SIM. Later I came back to Canada and was using nicely with my SIM here in Canada after getting it unlocked. Today I reset the factory setting and I could not use any more my Canadian SIM card. I can't also see the settings or anything to get my Wifi in home. I read from the forum that I need a T-mibile SIM card to activate it. Is it the fact? Then how can I use it Canada as I don't have any T-mobile SIM card. Please help me with proper advise.

im having the same problem after trying to root my g1.
after rolling back to rc29, i can't activate my google account as iam in canada as well. the phone was unlocked and working before i rolled back.
did you have to use the tmobile sim card with data plan?
