My girlfriend sent me a picture of the two of us via text message, and I want to add it to the Gallery in my Android Maxx. I have tried but been unable to figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

How to Add a Photo to my Gallery Sent by Text Message

If you long press the photo a menu should pop up. There should be an option to save it. I use Hangouts and can 'save media' to my phone that way.

I just bought this phone a week ago, and am still learning how to use it. I don't know what you mean by messaging app.
Texting app. It shouldn't matter though.
Go to the text that has the picture in it, press and hold (for a second) the picture. That should bring up the menu, you should be able to select save.
Long press is your friend in Android, depending on where you are it brings up another menu. Give it go
