How to auto backup phone before it is faulty or lost?

spman

Android Enthusiast
I want to be prepared so if one day my android phone is lost or faulty, I can just buy a new phone to recover all the data and make the new phone to have everything like the old phone (sms history/whatsapp/telegram/call/messages history/app settings/photos...)

What are the steps to properly backup everything?

If possible, I would prefer to set and forget, something like auto-scheduled backup.

I do not want to root the phone.

Thanks.

You will need multiple separate backups.

You can let Google back up app data - check your settings to see what it backs up on your phone (it backs up stuff like SMS on a Pixel but not on other phones I believe). There are many SMS backup apps that can automate this. WhatsApp can back up on a schedule. I don't know about Telegraph. There are apps that can do automatic cloud backups of photos (Google Photos is the commonest). You get the picture.

You can also back up most app data to a computer over USB using an app like Helium (no root required), and copy most other data (photos etc) over USB. Obviously this approach requires action rather than happening automatically.

Well there is no official one-click backup as I know of, even if some backup apps can do that task (probably for rooted phones only), it doesn't mean you can restore everything to your next phone as it could be a different phone running different Android version, and you'll have to root your new phone at the first place.

Root is off-topic here, but Titanium is pretty good at restoring apps across android versions (system data are a different matter, of course). But that just backs up app data (can do SMS and call logs in a portable form too), not photos - those require nothing special to back up so are outside its remit. Hence even with root there is no "one click" that does absolutely everything.

You root your new phone? I read rooting will void the warranty, what happens if you have display problems (e.g. lines/dots on screen), software/hardware problems (unable to rotate/hang/shut down randomly/camera problems) during the first year, do you need to pay for repair?

I read about rooting and seems there are too many methods and technical steps, so I don't want to mess with rooting as I might end with a useless phone brick.

I guess you guys rooted, can you share what is your backup plan/app that requires rooting? Just wanted to see if it really makes a big difference of auto backup if a phone is rooted vs non rooted.

Thanks.

I mostly use like the old USB to my comp, also let google cloud take care of my photos mostly.
But not so sure on contacts either though, I have not went to my verizon account in a few years give or take, to retrieve a few phone numbers though. Like I said a while back or two though.

Last time I gave my phone number, was to my girl :) I will wait for her message to write down her number or save it in my notebook app :)

If you have a pc, my suggestion is transferring data from your android phone to pc for backup. It's easy. You can use Android mobile manager tool to help you do that. First link your android phone to pc via usb cable. A short time scanning later, you can take backup of data on your Android phone with one-click.

What is the link of the android mobile manager you talking about?

I searched and saw this https://www.android-mobile-manager.com/android-manager.html , not sure if it is safe to use.
