Apps How to autosign modified .apk's?

I have a modified .apk (a popular home screen replacement where I simply replaced a few of the png images inside).

I have been searching countless forums for hours now. I found two methods for autosigning, but both of them seem tailored to ROM.zip's rather than .apk's... and one of them warned not to try on an apk in Win7 or it would put your phone in an endless loop.

1) xda-developers - View Single Post - [HOW TO] Manuals for creating a theme

2) General ROM FAQ - Android Central Forums

Since the second post did not have the Win7 warning, I tried out that method (on Win7), and sure enough, it did put my phone in an endless loop where it would not boot. I had to use recovery mode and wipe all my data.

Now I'm back at square one and still stumped. How can I sign my apk?

Thanks!

Isn't the entire idea of signing that you can't edit the APK without knowing the passwords and keys that it was signed with?

I am not an expert on this stuff, but I think the purpose of digital signatures is to verify the source/integrity of the data.

Not to prevent modification to the data.

I don't fully understand the point of it, though.
