[How to?] Backup non-app data

Ok so I need to send my phone back for repair (HTC Legend, vibrator is broken/wiggly).

I havent backup up a phone before so I will probably forget to mention some of the things that can (and must be) backed up.
The phone is not rooted btw.

My question is:
What is the best way to back up as much data as possible without rooting my phone?

My main concern is my messages, settings, contacts etc.
