Help How to bypass the 'pattern screen lock' and save phone

Hope someone will be able to help me - I know this is quite a 'common' problem.

I've lent my phone to my Daughter (yes. I know that was a silly move) and she has managed to put a pattern lock on it and can't remember the pattern !

I've been all over the 'net and can't get any of the various 'hold the volume key while pressing something else' procedures to work. I also don't have a G-mail account.

I've now realised that a complete re-set is the only option but how do I do it ????

Are you not able to enter recovery mode by removing the battery then re-insert then hold Volume up > Home > Power button in that order. The phone should then enter the recovery mode where you can perform a Factory reset. Use the volume keys to navigate up and down and the Home key to make a selection.

I have tried all sorts of 'holding things' combinations but none seem to work.
