Help How to change Contacts email from g-mail to hotmail?

So when I got my S6 Edge last week and went through the setting up, I had to use my old g-mail address – not a problem but I have been using Hotmail for some years and set my g-mail address to forward all emails to my Hotmail.

The problem I have is that when I want to send an email to a contact it always seems to default to using g-mail and I cant see a way to change this to the Hotmail, even as an option.


The phone has my Hotmail address in it as an account and I see emails coming in via my Hotmail, I just cant seem to send out via contacts in anything but g-mail. Can anyone suggest a way round this or a fix?

...or am I stuffed?

Assuming you are using your stock mail app (or similar) for your Hotmail account you should get the usual choice pop-up with 'Once only' or 'Always' when you try to email a contact, offering you Gmail and your other mail app/s.

Have you made sure that Gmail is not set as default?

Alternatively, you could go into your Gmail settings on a PC/Laptop :-

Accounts and Import - Send mail as:

and add your Hotmail account. You can then choose the Hotmail account using the drop-down list in the Gmail 'From' box.

Thanks - not sure I follow all of that but I'll give it a go.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to admit my stupidity in pressing the "use Gmail always" option in the first contact it came up on, but it appears to have taken the setting to mean all contacts I guess.

Not sure how to find whether Gmail is the default on the phone. I'll look tonight and reply.

Hi, go into:-

Settings - Apps - All

Scroll down to Gmail, tap it to get 'App Info', then scroll down to 'Clear defaults'.

(Assuming it's the same on the S6 Edge as my HTC)
