How to change SD card and retain data?

smurph1

Android Enthusiast
I have a new 32gb sandisk sd card, and was wondering what the procedure is to swap, and retain data/pics on old card.
I tried a swap, after copying all files to temp folder on desktop, and i have had some issues with card, and not copying files correctly to card.
Now when i try to copy a file to the card, it makes my PC re-boot....HELP...
Do I need to re-format card somehow - note that I have no method to insert in a PC!

Sounds like a bad card. You can certainly try a card reader attached to your PC but mounting to your PC, copying from the old card to your PC and then copying from your PC to the new card should work. It wouldn't hurt to format the card with your device and try again.

A colleague had the reader, removed card from phone, formatted it, added all previous cards data, and few other files, re-inserted into phone, and most of the files, like pics, pdf manuals and my apps are not there, and when card removed and re-inserted into PC are not present!!
Weird, any ideas, is card faulty or has it a virus?

EDIT - tried putting data on card again, and after removal from PC, I re-inserted into PC, and data is missing, so not the phone, or card in my opinion.
Is there some android security on the card I need to bypass?
Or is there a better method to do this?

I doubt it is a virus issue. I would suspect it has more to do with the card reader (assuming that is what you are using) connected to the computer. It sounds like your phone still recognizes the card. Try a reformat, plug your phone into the computer, select "storage mode" (I think that's the right term but someone correct me if I am wrong please) on the android device, and drag and drop the files onto the card exactly as they were on the old card.

I had this issue when I was using a buggy version of Froyo. Still not sure what caused it, but I would recommend formatting the card (through your phone in the settings menu), then loading everything onto it through your phone via usb debug.
Don't connect the sd card to your computer directly. I don't know why, but this might be causing the problem.

Thanks for all your help, like to report that I got it sorted
Formatted thru reader via PC, re-inserted into phone and dropped files into it, all seems ok.
Notes:
Format SD card option on phone is greyed out / unavailable.
Card reader was SDHC compatible, but am guessing doesn't cope with new larger capacity cards.

Now to create further posts to solve all my other new android issues;)
