How to completely sync two different phones

MarcDS

Lurker
My Samsung S8+ is again broken. Customer "Service" in Bali does not have spare parts, they have to be sent from Jakarta. So, again I have to wait at least 3 days. Better call it customer punishment.

Anyway, I wonder if it is possible to buy a second phone, put my SIM card in it, and just continue to enjoy its use. Emails, contacts, calendar and photos are stored in the cloud, so, no problem there. But what about SMS, Whatsapp and Line conversations? How do I get these from the first to second phone? What about the progress and scores of games that do NOT upload the results to their servers? How can I continue to play them on the second phone without losing any progress?

Any solutions?

Well if the first phone is broken and isn't operational at all, i.e. it's dead, you won't be able to access any data on it I don't think, not until it's repaired. That's why it's always important to backup, because accidents can and do happen.

The SIM just contains details that identifies it to the carrier, basically just a number. Put it in a second phone, and sure you'll be able to make calls, texts, internet access, etc. And things that are in the cloud, will still be in the cloud of course, like Gmail etc.

Yes, I understand that. I guess what I am looking for is:
Something
  1. Something that automatically backs up SMS, WhatsApp and Line conversations while phone 1 is normally running
  2. Something that automatically backs up game data while phone 1 is running
  3. Someway to restore this data on phone 2 when necessary (I think Whatsapp and Line automatically delete everything when you change phone, so, how to solve that?)
  4. Phone 2 should also automatically backup everything so I can change back to phone 1 later

Thanks for your suggestion. But after my bad experience with Samsung "Service" I would rather not buy Samsung again. Smart Switch also requires phone 1 to be operational which it isn't. I also think Smart Switch will copy the data I already have in the cloud. I don't think it will copy SMS, Whatsapp and Line conversations or game data

Whatsapp allows you to backup to sd card or to the cloud (I use Google Drive to backup Whatsapp)

I don't game much nor care about backups so maybe someone else can offer a solution.

If you don't buy another samsung, then you'll have to backup using individual apps.

Photos - Google Photos or sd card
Texts - SMS Backup and Restore
Files - SD Card or Cloud (I use Google Drive)
Music - SD Card

I use 2 phones and switch the sim card frequently. I just pop the sd card in either phone and all my data xfers over.

Thanks for your reply. Photos, documents and music are no problem (they are already on Onedrive). Whatsapp does indeed backup, but I wonder if it is automatic (continuous) or manual. In the latter case it wont help if the phone breaks down because I would lose conversations since last backup.

I wonder if installing games on an SD card instead of main memory would also store the game data on the SD card. Somebody know?

1. If you enabled Samsung account on the first phone while using it, your messages would have been backed up to cloud and would automatically restore if you activate it on another Samsung phone. I know this because I've done it several times. No interaction needed, it would back up as often as you set it to (daily, weekly, etc).

2. Not possible I think. to have a third party automatically accessing and backing up contents of another app without root. The only backups capable of doing what you want is Samsung Cloud and Google Backup, or the app itself though it's own login (Gameloft servers, Facebook games, etc), but the apps themselves must supoort that. If they have no login or save, then you have to do it manually.

3. No idea. I don't use them.

4. Again Samsung cloud does this.

Basically, Samsung cloud used together with a Google account is what's closest to what you want. If you leave Samsung, well, you're going to need to rely on Google backups and manual backing up.

For example, on an LG, you can backup your phone to LG Bridge and restore it to another phone. But you have to do it manually.

Thanks. I feared that my wishes could not be fulfilled automatically and your message seems to confirm that. I know about Samsung cloud and Onedrive but it only solves (a big) part of my problem. Too bad ...

Maybe an alternative would be to buy a phone that does not break down :)
