How to create/edit smileys/emoticons for GoSMS or Handcent?

Hey there, forgive me for posting a thread about something it seems is so common, but I'm having a lot of difficulty finding an answer!

I currently am using Handcent for my sms, but don't mind swapping to another one as long as it's customizable. I am a customization queen - if I can change it, I will.

What I'm looking to do is add, delete, edit or create more smileys/emoticons like you commonly see Japanese speakers using, like ( ^◡^)っ, \(@O@)/, (*

I'm a little confused. Where do you plan on using the emoticon? They are already in Handcent and Go SMS. Where does the copy pasting come into action?

Hey there! Sorry for not clarifying a little further.

There are emoticons, emoji and japanese emoticons in Handcent, yes, but I want to be able to change, delete, and add them, because I'm looking for lots of different emoticons that I can put into my texts from the keyboard rather than from a separate app that I have to open separately.

Petrah, I have never created an android app, and only really know CSS and HTML when it comes to any sort of languages other than English, so I'm not sure that me creating something from scratch is the smartest approach... but if it's not too difficult to learn, then I'd definitely give it a shot!

As for your question, chanchan, I have found apps that have lots and lots of the japanese text emoticons that I'm looking for, but they require you to click the button to copy the emoticon and paste it into the text box for an sms message (or other text input) rather than just clicking to insert it. It's a hassle!

To ensure I know what you want.. the ability/knowledge needed to open the handcent apk file, add the emotes (so that they show up on the keyboard shortcut making it easier to add them to your texts), and then repackage it for personal use?

Or, does Handcent already have this feature where users can add their own, but you don't know how to do it?

It's been ages since I've used Handcent, so not sure if such an option exists.

Yes, Petrah, that's exactly what I'm looking for - opening, adding and repackaging it. I'm so sorry for sounding like I don't know what I'm talking about...but I just don't know what I'm talking about. I just want pretty text macros (as you put it) and have them easy to get to.

Thank you again for bearing with me. I'll learn Android eventually, I swear it.... but for now I'll have to ask for help.

Not a problem, and don't apologize. :)

I'm not sure how you would go about doing something like that, and it's a bit beyond the scope of Android Applications. You may wish to try the Application Development forums to see if a few of the developers can assist you.

Before you do that though, a word of caution; Handcent is a copyrighted app, so before you open it up it may be a good idea to get in contact with the app developer and request permission to edit their app. They may not even care, but it's always respectful to ask first.

If there's anything else you need, don't hesitate to ask!

Well an easy solution would be to make notes which contain the smiley and just insert the note with the smiley you want.
