Hi,

I want to install android market applications using my PC internet connection. I dnt want to use my mobile internet. I have installed PC companion and connected the phone but when I try to install the market applications it says "This app will be downloaded to your device shortly" and nothing happens afterwards.

Is there any way I could perform this operation ?? Or any connection settings to be done. I am aware of the .apk file installations but I want to know about android market applications specifically.

Please check the attached screen shots as well.

Thanks
Sree

There's no way to download from the market to a PC via the webpage. I don't know what PC connect allows or transmits to/from your phone, but I'd be happy to move your thread to the appropriate phone forum to see if anyone who has your device has figured out a way. I just need to know what your device is specifically.

There are no legitimate ways to download files from the market to your pc and then push them to your phone. Any site that distributes .apk files for download is most likely doing so without the permission of the developers. We don't approve of this practice and certainly don't allow discussions of methods to do it.

There is a Google Chrome add-on that will allow you to download any "free" apps directly from the Market to your computer once you provide you device's serial number and your email address that is tied to your Google account.

If for some reason this isn't allow please remove it but I do not see it being a problem since it is only for free apps and not paid apps.

I removed the link because I believe the developer of that extension disabled it within hours of it being released due to concerns of piracy. We did have a bit of back room discussion about it and I tried it. It would in fact work for paid apps on first release though it does appear that he altered the extension so it would no longer work with paid apps. What was even more disturbing was handing over your Google credentials using an unsigned SSL certificate. It seems like a perfect opportunity for identity theft.

What happened was that he had it up for the Market and once it got changed to the Play Store he had to redo the extension. Thanks for looking into it, I also did not like the idea of handing over Google credentials using an unsigned SSL certificate.

The other problem I have with the extension is that it might be violating the TOS for the market (aka Google Play)

3.3 You agree not to access (or attempt to access) Google Play by any means other than through the interface that is provided by Google, unless you have been specifically allowed to do so in a separate agreement with Google. You specifically agree not to access (or attempt to access) Google Play through any automated means (including use of scripts, crawlers, or similar technologies) and shall ensure that you comply with the instructions set out in any robots.txt file present on the Google Play website.

This extension is certainly not an interface provided by Google, but one could argue that you are using the Google Play interface, just spoofing it to think you are a mobile device. To me that violates the spirit of the terms if not the actual language.

3.8 You agree that Google and/or third parties own all right, title and interest in and to Google Play and the Products available through Google Play, including without limitation all applicable Intellectual Property Rights in the Products. "Intellectual Property Rights" means any and all rights existing under patent law, copyright law, trade secret law, trademark law, unfair competition law, and any and all other proprietary rights worldwide. You agree that you will not, and will not allow any third party to, (i) copy, sell, license, distribute, transfer, modify, adapt, translate, prepare derivative works from, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble or otherwise attempt to derive source code from the Products, unless otherwise permitted, (ii) take any action to circumvent or defeat the security or content usage rules provided, deployed or enforced by any functionality (including without limitation digital rights management or forward-lock functionality) in the Products, (iii) use the Products to access, copy, transfer, transcode or retransmit content in violation of any law or third party rights, or (iv) remove, obscure, or alter Google's or any third party's copyright notices, trademarks, or other proprietary rights notices affixed to or contained within the Products.

That's pretty clear. Long but clear.
