Help How to easily get a voice assistant on the Google Maps app?

How to easily get a voice assistant to read me the directions in real time on the Google Maps app?
Is it in some setting somewhere?
I'm coming from an old iphone 4s and apple maps had a straightforward voice setting including choice of american vs british vs australian accent.

the native google maps app will read the directions on its own. this is not device specific.

you must have some setting turned off in the app.

Yes oops, I think it was a trivial setting - just the side volume up down buttons
