How to edit vcf file

Okay, I'm lazy, I like to use the voice command option to pull up contacts. Unfortunately, every time I use it, the app comes back with duplicate numbers for each listing. I want to open up the contact list and delete the extra entries. If i hit the contact button on the bottom of the home screen it opens the list that is backed up to gmail and shows only one number for each contact.
If I want to forward a text message, the resulting contact list shows the duplicate entries but I'm unable to edit the list. I found a vcf file on my external card so am assuming it is the list in question. If so, how do I open and edit it?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I'd log into your gmail account on a computer, edit your Contact list from there, and let it automatically sync the alterations to your phone.
I'm guessing that vcf file you found on your SDcard is a backup you made previously using 'Import/Export' in your phone's Contact menu. Check the date on that vcf file using the third-party 'ES Explorer' app or the already included Android 'My Files' app, if you didn't just do an export that might not even be current backup anyway.
Using a text editor to edit a vcf file needs to be done with care, there's very little room for error as far as retaining all the proper lines of text related to formatting.
If you have access to a PC it's a lot less problematic to just log into your gmail account and avoid the export/edit vcf/import process.
