How to fix the "check for updates" button

For those who want their updates straight away Google's phased roll-out can be an irritant. But the real annoyance is having a "check for updates" button that doesn't actually do anything. But there is a solution.

As Android Police report, a newly released Google Play Services beta fixes the button (which was broken by a Google Play Services update last year). I've tested this and can confirm that it works. I didn't bother with the beta program, just installed the apk from apkmirror.com - make sure you use the right sub-version for your device (since my installed one was the "940" variant I used that version of the beta - less trouble to look up what was installed than to work out what the codes mean).

It's a fur-trimmed gold lame spacesuit, as worn by Arnold Rimmer's heroic alternate dimension counterpart "Ace" in the Red Dwarf episode "Dimension Jump" (hence the "location" in my profile). What type of fur was never disclosed, though given that it would have been made by the BBC's props department my guess would be "nylon" ;).

(A few years ago I was alternating Red Dwarf characters for my avatars, but when it came to Rimmer's turn I decided the use Ace Rimmer, Spacecorp Test Pilot, rather than Arnold J Rimmer BSC ("Bronze Swimming Certificate"). And somehow I never got round to changing it again).
