For those who want their updates straight away Google's phased roll-out can be an irritant. But the real annoyance is having a "check for updates" button that doesn't actually do anything. But there is a solution.
As Android Police report, a newly released Google Play Services beta fixes the button (which was broken by a Google Play Services update last year). I've tested this and can confirm that it works. I didn't bother with the beta program, just installed the apk from apkmirror.com - make sure you use the right sub-version for your device (since my installed one was the "940" variant I used that version of the beta - less trouble to look up what was installed than to work out what the codes mean).
