How to get data only plan for a MyTouch 3G?

First of all, I do want to apologise for asking a question that has been asked numerous times, but I've dealt with the Sprint world for almost a decade, plus with my research I keep finding things that are no longer applicable due tot T-Mobile chaniging the plans or stuff that only works if you're an existing customer.

Okay here's my situation. I'll probably only be in the country for a couple of months, so I don't have a phone to use until then. I think I have an opportunity to get a hold of a myTouch 3G and wanted to figure out how to use it for as cheaply as possible.

I'm thinking that between google voice, SIP, and constantly being around Wi-Fi, I can get away with getting that 200mb plan for new customers for like $15.

What I can't figure out is do I have to account for a voice plan as well or can I get away without it if I don't have to?

Also, once I get this phone, do I just make a phone call or find a T-Mobile store to do this without any contract or what is the procedure?

Thank you for any help you can provide and I apologise once again for cluttering up the board.

If you use a VoIP service with only 200MB of data, you're likely to go over your limit.

I recommend going with one of the T-Mobile's prepaid plans. T-Mo has several prepaid subscriptions, some of which include a data allotment. In my opinion, the pay-as-you-go plan is the best option if you don't plan on making a lot of calls. Depending on the denomination of your refill card you can pay anywhere from 10

If you're looking at their webConnect plans, those are contract-only, on a two-year agreement. You're better off looking under prepaid plans if you're wanting something for just a few months: Unsupported Browser

They have a really great online-chat feature to ask pretty much anything you want, with friendly, helpful reps: https://support.t-mobile.com/caseSubmitForm.html?

As for switching, the fastest way to do it is to visit a store, since they can get the sim card and pop it in right there. Just go in there with the phone, tell 'em what you want, pay for it, done. (Well, okay, it's a little longer than that... you do have to give them your info so they can set you up in the system, and of course, the time it takes to put the sim card in.) You CAN order online or over the phone, but then you have to wait for the card to get there, and then call and activate the service and so on. I preferred going to the store, because then I could ask any additional questions while I was there.
