Help How to get group chats to work on Android

Brennan

Lurker
I have a Galaxy ZTE (Z750C) with Android version 4.1.2. I am trying to get into a group chat, but that feature isn't available on this version of Android. I have Straight Talk as my carrier.

If I get added to a group chat, then all the messages come out from their specified senders and I can't sent any messages back to the entire group, only to one person at a time.

I tried downloading the app GroupMe, but the messages just come out as they would without the app. Maybe I'm using it wrong?

From what I've seen, my phone can't be rooted so I can't get any custom Android versions.

If I try to update my Android version by going to Settings>About Phone>System Updates, all it says there is: "Please copy update package to root directory on storage card, then click OK button." I'm not entirely sure what that means, but I think it has something to do with root, and like I said before, my phone can't be rooted.

Any ideas on how to get into a group chat?

If you need any more info, just ask.

"root directory on the storage card" just means "copy it to the storage card but don't put it inside a folder", i.e. copy it to /sdcard. I'm not sure why it's asking you to do that though: normally the "System Updates" folder just gives you the option to download and once that's done to install, nothing else.

But have you tried installing Textra and using that in place of your current message app? Just install it and set it to "use MMS for group chats" and that should solve your problem.

I actually have that already, but it seems my MMS is not configured properly. I found some guides online, but I can't find the settings page where you edit or add a new APN. I think the guides' settings page has a different layout than mine. Any ideas?

I don't know Samsung's menu structure (or what a carrier might do to it). I'd expect it to be in the mobile data settings.

Doesn't seem to be there in the mobile data settings.

This is probably not your expertise, but I made a new post which no one has replied to yet and I am kind of desperate.

Here is the post:

"I am trying to get into a group chat on an outdated Android version (4.1.2) on a Galaxy ZTE (Z750C) using Straight Talk. I downloaded Textra, but for some reason it said my MMS settings were not set.

I did some research and it said that this is a common problem for Straight Talk users. All the guides say to follow this one path in the settings, which my phone doesn't have that exact path. They say to go to: Settings > Wireless Connections > More > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names, but if I go to more, the only option is VPN. There is a separate tab for Mobile Networks in the main settings page, but there are only 4 settings there that seem to be completely unrelated to my problem. How do I add a new APN?

I did research a while ago and it seems that my phone cannot be rooted.

Yeah, saw you'd started another thread. I'm not a Samsung expert and also have no experience with Straight Talk devices (I'm British), so I'm hoping someone more familiar will pick that up.
