ROMs How to get started on porting a custom recovery?

Okay, so i've done a bit of digging, ( https://www.androiddevice.info/submission/36697/show )

I need some basic bare assistant on setting up an environment for making a recovery.

Do I need archlinux in a VM or full form to be able to make the recovery file?

Do I need to root my device to get the boot.zip?

Anything specific I should know? (I'm using this guide http://xda-university.com/as-a-developer/getting-started-building-android-from-source | http://xda-university.com/as-a-developer/porting-clockworkmod-recovery-to-a-new-device )
