How to get turn-by-turn navigation following a custom route?

Everything I found regarding this topic is over 3 years old. Surely there has been some progress.

I have Google Maps Engine 62. I created a custom map on my PC, containing a single layer - a handcrafted route from point A to point B. I am able to show it on my device, but I can't figure out how to tell the device to follow the actual route.
When I click on the route, a menu on the bottom shows up and I can select Navigate, BUT, this apparently sends an intent containing not the route itself, but only its start- and endpoint. Thus it only offers to navigate me by an 'optimized' route.

What I want to achieve - I created a cyclist route and I want the Google Navigation to give me a turn-by-turn following exactly this route, I don't want it to find me another (albeit shorter) route.

How do I do that?

Thanks

I don't think Google maps allows waypoints or adding destinations to a trip any more.

The more they "improve" it, the more they ruin it.
