It's hard to say: when it was first posted you did get people replying claiming they had done this and wrecked their phones, but was that real or just people playing up to the joke?

Remember that it's not the first: a previous one had claimed that a new iOS version made your phone waterproof, because it would use the touchscreen to detect that the phone had been dunked and switch it off to avoid damage. Again, very hard to say whether people really fell for it (though given how little most people understand about either electronics or software, it's not implausible that there are people out there who would believe such stuff).

I remember that one and some other how microwaving an iPhone would charge it up quickly. iPhone users spend hundreds (or thousands) and yet they are clueless. Apple sure knows its fanbase. 👌
 
Well it's not just iPhone users. About 2 weeks after the Galaxy S3 was released there were reports in the news about one bursting into flames. Then when the owner had returned it to Samsung and they'd had a look at it the truth came out: his friend (allegedly) had been playing with the new phone in the kitchen, spilled some water on it, and then tried to dry it in the microwave...
