How To Make Hancents my default SMS

I have attempted to make Handcent my Default SMS by following instructions found on various forums. I went to Messages-Menu-Setting and removed all the checkmarks next to any item listing notifications. I then enabled notifications on the Handcent by following the same steps.

This does not seem to work. I still have the default stock SMS.

Can someone walk me through how to set it up? What am I doing wrong?
Any help would be appreciated....

Are you still getting the stock notifications?

1. turn off all notifications from the stock app
2. use the handcent shortcut to launch the app NOT the "messages" icon
3. when get the "send with.." prompt when selecting to message from a contact (or elsewhere), highlight Handcent and check the "make default" box

If you don't get the prompt, you need to clear the default setting in whatever app is launching.

The stick app does not "go away", you just choose not to use it
