How to re-initialize sim card?

durbz

Lurker
I have an external sim tray hooked up to my phone. When I swap the sim card in the external tray with a new one, it will not work/be recognized, unless I reboot the phone, or open and close the phone's sim tray.

Is there a way I could force the sim card to re-initialize without a phone reboot, or opening the sim tray?

Thanks for the suggestion, I have tried that, but it doesn't work on the phone model I am using (huawei p smart)

Ooops ... sorry, I wasn't paying attention. My wife must have been talking. ;) :(

External sim tray? How does it connect? Via the sim slot or USB port?

it is a ribbon cable, one end of it has a sim tray, the other end has the sim-card contacts, which slot in to the phone's sim tray like a normal sim would.

Okay, after a little research, I found that while many of the newer flagships do support SIM hot-swapping, some do not. As a matter of fact, the exact quote from the Huawei support site states "Some phone models do not support the hot swapping of SIM cards. In this case, restart your phone for the SIM card to be detected and identified." So, if your model doesn't specifically say it supports hot-swapping sims, then I'd have to assume it doesn't.

hmm, I can just eject the sim tray slightly and push it back in to re-initialize the sim card though. I am left wondering how that works. And if that counts as "hot-swappng"

Well, if that's the case, then I'd say your external sim reader is not just an extension but requires a driver to be reloaded to re-read the sim card.

I am fairly certain it is just an extension. I don't see any electronic chips on it.

OK, photo is revealing. That's a third party (Gold Finger) dual-SIM adapter, not necessarily an 'external' device, it might simply be a matter of the phone just doesn't support that particular adapter device. Is there an app that corresponds with it, presumably to add device driver/firmware support?
Is the already existing Huawei SIM tray in your phone a single-SIM or dual-SIM tray?

Yes, it is meant to go in the 2nd sim/micro-sd card hybrid slot, in order to allow you to use a second sim at the same time as a micro-sd card. I understood that when I bought it.
Dont think my phone supports dual sim, I wanted to just use it as a way to swap sims without opening the sim tray. I want to make something which allows me to easily swap between a lot of sims quickly.
No firmware mentioned on the product page.
