Help How to read or restore old SMS_backup

Hi all.

Recently, I switched from an old HTC Thunderbolt to a Galaxy S5. On the HTC, I had backed up my SMS messages onto the SD Card. The SMS backup file that resulted was in the SD Card's SMS_backup folder, but had no file extension. I cannot do anything with this file...It is binary and no app recognizes it. I tried tagging on an .hbk extension and played with that to no avail.

Is there any way to recover the information in this file?

What app did you use to make the backup? Without that information we've no chance.

If it was a HTC utility I'd suggest redoing the backup with an app from the Play Store, then installing the same app on the S5 and using that to restore.
 
The old phone is long gone. So I guess unless there is some app that can recognize an HTC backup file, I am doomed. Doomed, I tell you! :(
 
Well, I don't know what app you use to backup SMS. In my opinion, you can use HTC Sync to backup SMS on your HTC Thunderbolt. Then, use Samsung Smart Switch to restore SMS to your new Samsung S5.
 
My backup was probably done via HTC's app. The backup is now on my Galaxy, but I only want to restore the messages. HTC Sync apparently does not allow that...It wants to talk to the original DEVICE.
 
HTC Sync won't talk to a Galaxy, same as Samsung's Kies won't talk to any non-Samsung device. That's the problem with proprietary solutions.

Unless you can get your hands on an HTC phone I think you may indeed be doomed. :(
 
Well, did you delete the messages on your HTC Thunderbolt? If, not, I think you can try MobileGo - an all-in-one Android management software. It can talk to both your HTC Thunderbolt and Samsung S5.
Just connect your HTC Thunderbolt to computer via USB cable or WiFi and run MobileGo. After connected, use MobileGo to backup SMS to computer. Then connect your Samsung S5 to computer, and restore the messages to your Samsung S5
