How to read storage in tablet

I have an Android 4.0.4 tablet. Trying to decipher the Storage listings in Settings. There are two listings, each labeled as Internal Storage. This was advertised as having 512 Mb memory, but these numbers in Storage just don't add up. How are we supposed to read this?

512MB or storage or 512MB of RAM (sometimes called memory, although everything in a cellphone is actually memory)?
