How to remove branding

Hello

I assume I am in the right group.

I have a low end tablet I received from a corporate promotion.

I want to remove the company's branding and installed applications and start with a completely fresh device.

How do I do this?

Chris

You would need to find the stock firmware for your device and a method to install it. Sometimes hard to find with low end devices because the manufacturers do not make it available.

Hi Jfalls63 - thanks for this steer. I've never done that before. How would I go about:

a/ finding the firmware?
b/ installing it?

Chris

Yea, be easier with device details. As @Jfalls63 says it is unlikely there will be enough development for low end devices but looking on XDA if the device on there is usually a good start for Firmware, Custom Recoveries etc.
Being a low end device "one click" root apps may work, but is inadvisable as they can be more of a hindrance if there is another way. And if you are looking to get rid of system apps you would really want a custom recovery to make a backup.

Thanks Savage Robot. That makes sense.

This tablet I feel is REALLY low end. I use it as a document reader, email client and basic Web viewer so I'm more interested in freeing up space at this point. My data is in the cloud so I don't need a major back up tool. :-)

Look in Settings - About Tablet and it should list a model number.
The way the partitions are set up on most devices, system data and user data are separate. Even if you remove a lot of pre installed apps or bloat that is installed in the system, you will not gain any usable space for user data.
Usually with a 16 gig device, about 5gig or more is set aside for system with the remaining for user data.

Hi jfalls63

Thank you for that. All it says under model number is "rockchip"

That's ok re data. I'd be happy just to remove the bloat. I can always pick up a mini sd card for app and data storage.

Not a lot to go on. @SavageRobot advice on one click root apps may be your only chance at root. Then you could use Titanium Backup to freeze the bloat to see how device behaves before you delete anything
Just remember that once it borks, there is probably not going to be a way to revive it.

Thanks jfalls63

Can you recommend a good newbie guide to this? I don't really know where to start and how to go about running the install.

No guide for your device but I know a few things to try. Just remember, you assume all responsibility.
There is only one current automated rooting program that I know of that doesn't install a bunch of junk on your device that you can't get rid of.

http://mobilego.wondershare.com

It has a free trial version that you can use to try and get root access. If successful, I would go ahead and delete program from PC.
If you get root access, there are a few apps you will need to get from the Play Store.
SuperSu, Root Checker, BusyBox, Titanium Backup.

Open SuperSu and let it update its binary.
Open BusyBox and let it install. Should get a prompt from SuperSu to allow access. Grant it.
Open Root Checker app and check root and BusyBox for proper installation. Same prompt from SuperSu.
Open Titanium Backup and let it set up and populate apps list.

Let me know if/ when you get that far, then you can go through apps to freeze/disable with Titanium Backup.
