how do you remove download history in the market app?

You don't, it's there to tell you of the downloads you have made and will list any that have updates available if you choose to ignore the notification.

No way to do it apart from resetting your phone to factory defaults - hard resetting it.

If you uninstall an app the entry under downloads will go away, also.

That doesn't work either It's linked to your Google account.

I've found recently that uninstalled apps are taking a while to disappear from the list. They will go eventually.
