Help How to remove the 1000 text limit (ANSWERED)

Lurker
Firstly, why is there a limit to begin with? Seems like there should just be an option to turn off the limit. But there isn't.... wtf...

I installed handscent, it didn't help though. I tried leaving the 'delete old messages' box checked, and setting it to 5000. But that didn't work. So i tried unchecking it, that didn't work either...

Does anyone know how to stop it from deleting my messages after i have 1000 of them?

Save the 'why do you need more than 1000 messages anyway?' argument. Why does anyone care Why i want more than 1000?

Using a Droid 4 by the way

Figured it out :D

For anyone else who wants to get rid of the 1000 messages cap:

(DOING THIS MAY VOID YOUR WARRANTY OR POSSIBLY BRICK YOUR PHONE)

1. Root Phone

2. Download/Install a Different SMS(texting) app from the Google Store
I chose to use the 'Handcent SMS' app

3. Download a Root Uninstaller
I used 'Root Uninstaller Free'

4. Uninstall the stock SMS app, it's called 'Text Messaging' I believe. Can't quite remember

5. Profit!!! Just remember to check the setting in your new SMS app for any limit. In Handcent you can turn off any limit or have it save upto 5000 texts and then start deleting old ones.

I'm not really sure if uninstalling the stock app can actually cause problems, but a few people told me it Could.

It obviously worked fine for me

uninstalling system apps could make it so you can never upgrade your phone. make sure you have a backup copy somewhere for when we get 4.0 ice cream sandwich.

always freeze system apps, never uninstall them.

I uninstalled the yahoo apps thinking it was part of yahoo which I never use. well it turns out to be part of the contact directory which was crashing whenever I opened it. I ended up having to get a new phone since the yahoo apps wouldn't re-install back.

I recently upgraded to a Motorola Razr I (yes, I know it's almost at end of life!) and
had a similar problem. Some 12,000 texts with individual threads of 3000+. As has already been said, there are no settings within the Motorola SMS that seem to help. I was close to getting rid of the handset as this is a major flaw (why restrict people Motorola??!! ). As a last resort I downloaded the Handcent app and can happily confirm that Handcent *does* work and NO NEED TO ROOT(!) and here's how. (1) Load and install Handcent. (2) Go into Handcent settings and select 'Application Settings'. (3) Select 'Default Messaging Application and choose 'All'. You will then receive some kind of prompt that it will 'take over' your stock messaging app. I.e. Junk the Moto one!!!! Accept this. You can now load your messages from your old handset using, say, SMS backup and restore. You will now find that your long threads stay long! I have been using it for weeks with no problems. Suggest you also do the following: Remove references to the Motorola SMS app ( I use ADW launcher which is a brilliant 'light' skin where you can replace such items). That way, I can't accidentally load the Moto one - you never know!!! Secondly, after loading your SMS, back them up and keep a note of the number backed up. Doing this frequently will confirm that your messages are not being deleted. Hope this helps!
