Root How To Root G1 And Keep/Backup?

I have an unrooted G1 with Android 1.6 and I just wanted to know if there was a way for me to root my g1 and keep my call log and text and number and everything after i did root. What would be the process. I have guides on how to root but what would i need to do to keep my stuff. If there isn't a way how exactly do i do a backup prior to me rooting it.
 
MyBackup is available out of the Market and will back up things like texts, contacts, call logs. Then you can restore after reformatting.
