That varies by phone. For example, on my Atrix 2, it's done by pressing and holding the power button while simultaneously pressing the 'volume down' button. If we knew the make and model of your phone, we could offer more specific help.

Your device may not have the screenshot option.
There are also apps available on Google Play which will allow you to take screenshots. Go to Play and type in the word " screenshot". Some apps require the device to be rooted while others do not. Keep that in mind when choosing the app.
