How to set (or can you) number of rings

Is there a way (I looked in the manual and couldn't find anything) to set the number of times the phone rings before the voice answering picks up?

That is usually controlled by your cellphone company. I know you can do it by sending a command to the company from your phone (I did on my old Nokia while on AT&T) and some people have done it by calling customer service.

I believe it is changeable in 5 second increments with a maximum of 30 seconds.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

If you have a GSM based phone, some have had success by dialing this number from your phone: **61*XXXXXXXXXXX**30#
  • Replace XXXXXXXXXXX with the number of your carrier voice mail center (find it by looking at your phone Dialer > Options > VoiceMail > Access Number. Put your access number in place of the Xs above.
For example, the T-Mobile Mail
access number is 18056377243, and thus the string to dial would be **61*18056377243**30#

  • Replace the 30 at the end of the string with your desired seconds. For most carriers, 30 seconds is the longest allowed.

I just stole that quote from BlackBerry FAQ - BlackBerryFAQ and it's pretty much what I had done when I had my N97 on AT&T

The phone will keep ringing until the call is forwarded. Your phone company controls when the call gets forwarded to your voicemail. The phone doesn't control this directly.
