Help How to show contacts from only one google account?

Trying to figure this out for a friend with a Moto X running Lollipop. Since google removed the option to show only contacts with phone numbers, I exported his google contacts and managed to remove the ones without numbers, then proceeded to create a new google account just for these contacts. So, I set up this new account on his Moto X, and configure it to display contacts only from this account. I launch the contact app and it works like a charm. But... if I open the phone app, it still shows ALL contacts from both accounts which are thousands. WTF, this shouldn't be so difficult. What should I do? Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Have you stopped the first account from syncing contacts via Settings - >Accounts?

I did, but apparently Lollipop likes to show ALL contacts from google accounts on the phone app, no matter what you do.

Have you cleared data/cache of the contacts app after you've unsynced the account you don't want?

You'll probably need to remove those contacts before they'll disappear, unsyncing alone won't work.

I'll have a muck about tonight and see if I can recreate/solve.
