Have you tried going into settings > language & Keyboard to see if there's an option for turning off the sound?

lol I've missed options on my phone to before. Glad you found it and enjoy the forums.

I found it by going to Settings-Language & Keyboard- under Keyboard Settings I had "Google Input" "FlexT9 Input" and "Android Keyboard". Under one of those is preferences and sound selection for key board. It took 3 months to figure it out. Duh!
