how to stop GO SMS PRO/HANDCENT restoring default settings upon boot?

So I've tried every single sms app, go sms pro, handcent, chompsms, sms popup, and the only ones I've liked the best so far are go sms pro and handcent. The problem I have with BOTH of these apps is that if I turn my phone off and turn it back on, the default settings restore on both of those apps. With handcent, ALL the default settings restore. All the tones go to whatever my default is, all the notification icons default, all individual settings, themes, visual things default and act as if I just installed the app. Now with GO sms pro, not all default settings restore, but the important ones do. Go sms actually keeps individual settings, themes, tones, notify icons, etc. What defaults are the basic options. I don't like a popup text notification interrupting me so I turn that off, I change the default tone, I change the default vibrate pattern, basically anything that's not an individual setting defaults to original settings.

Now for both apps, I have tried going into the "Settings backup and restore" option and saving my desired settings to my sd card in hopes that that was the problem why it defaulted was that I needed to actually save the setting, but nothing I have done so far has kept both apps from defaulting to original settings upon reboot of my phone. I have tried uninstalling apps I don't use, reinstalling go sms/handcent several times. In fact, go sms pro only works if I install the go sms widget first, then bind it with go sms pro. If I only have go sms pro installed, upon reboot of phone, if go sms pro is on my desktop as a widget, it will load up saying "problem loading widget" and then when I try to load it again as a widget it has disappeared from the widget menu so I have to uninstall it and reinstall go sms widget first, then pro.

I hope all this makes sense. Basically, I am trying to stop handcent and go sms pro from restoring default settings upon reboot of my phone and erasing all my customizations of themes and menu options. I am currently running go launcher ex (and even with my stock TWlauncher it still defaults on reboot) with android system 2.2.1

Are you rooted? What edits have you done to the system?

I am using a Samsung Galaxy SL and no, GO SMS does not reset to defaults if I reboot.

I've only had my samsung infuse for a couple months and only now have I started to download customization apps. I have not rooted my phone because I bought my phone for a lot of money because it was the newest at the time (and now of course it's worth half as much) and I don't want to void my warranty. I have not done anything to the system besides change preferences like changing text tones, ring tones, wallpaper, etc. I know nothing about rooting, but do you think that would solve the problem?

No it wont. The issue you are describing doesnt happen on my sister's unrooted phone, and I've had GO SMS from even before I rooted and it doesnt happen as well. I personally have no idea how to fix it, since clearing data and uninstalling does not help. I'm just saying that what you are experiencing isnt normal behavior. You can try contacting the developer.

I'll try contacting go then. I've done everything I can think of. I've uninstalled a lot of my apps that weren't stock and reverted back to the original launcher and it still does not work properly.

I'm no expert, but it sounds an awful lot like the permissions are wonky. To be totally honest if it were me, I'd factory reset the phone. If that didn't work, then I know it's not my phone and Id then contact the Go Dev Team.

When trying to troubleshoot an issue, its best to rule out your phone as being the cause before guessing that it's an app. This way, you've got a ton of info to give to the app dev about what you've already done to troubleshoot. It makes their job of trying to help you lots easier. ;)

I had this same problem on my Galaxy S. It can be caused (was caused in my case, maybe not in yours) by uninstalling and reinstalling the apps - this can sometimes fail to clear the settings which are held in the /dbdata/databases folder in a subfolder with the name of the app. Unfortunately this folder is not accessible if the phone isn't rooted - if it is, you can clear the settings manually by deleting the subfolder which forces the app to create a new one with your new settings. If you're not rooted the folder will appear empty and you can't do it.

If, like me, you haven't rooted your phone, the only cure I have found is a factory reset. This does clear the problem, but I'm careful now not to uninstall and then reinstall Go SMS or Handcent. If you've backed up your settings in Go SMS you will be able to restore them after the reset as Go stores the settings on the SD card which isn't affected by the reset.

It's a bit of a pain, but it's worth it.

Hmm, ok. I don't want to root it so I'll try factory reset and see if that works. Thanks, I'll keep this post updated and see if this works

Oh my god, after all that ****ing with it, it looks the factory reset worked, and the widget stays on my desktop and keeps the factory settings. I can finally stop playing with the phone. I've lost hours trying to figure out it wouldn't work. Thanks for that advice!
