Help How to stop my phone from booting into bootloader?

Hi there everyone,

I have an ad-supported Moto G4 that I just got. I was going to follow the instructions found on XDA for removing the ads by RootJunky but it didn't work, which I'm ok with.

What bugs me, however is the fact that it always boots to the bootloader now and not into the OS. I got an OS update which failed and I'm wondering if this is why.

Could someone tell me how to get it to boot normally again?

On bootup, I'm greeted with the android doll and AP Fastboot Flash Mode at the top of the wall of text. My choices are:

Start
Restart Bootloader
Recovery Mode
Power Off
Factory Mode
Barcodes
BP Tools
QCom
Bootloader Logs

I've tried Start and Factory Mode, but both obviously result in restarting into the bootloader.

Another oddity is that I'm only allowed "Power Off" when longpressing the power while the phone is running. Restart or Airplane mode is not available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you have to issue any commands in fastboot?
Can you post a link to the guide?
Sounds like you need to enter command
fastboot oem fb_mode_clear
To get it to boot normally.

Sorry, I should have linked the guide. Here it is.

I made it as far as running the .xml in RSDLite, which failed. After that, I just Booted it like normal and have been using it.

Look at post # 526 on last page of link.
Since the guide is several months old, it may not work anymore due to updated firmware.
Do you have ADB and Fastboot on your PC?

You can get Minimal ADB and Fastboot from here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
Install on your PC and Open. Connect your phone with it in bootloader/ fastboot mode.
Type " fastboot devices" without the quotes and enter. Should return with your device ID number if PC is talking to phone.
Type "fastboot oem fb_mode_clear" without the quotes and enter.
Last will be "fastboot reboot" without the quotes and enter.

Hi there again,

I installed the min adb and fastboot and the terminal is open. I turned on the phone which went to bootloader and then I plugged it into the PC. On the phone's screen, the text at the bottom was updated to say

Battery OK [Charging]
oem_locked
Software status: Official
Transfer Mode: USB Connected

In the terminal, I typed fastboot devices and hit return. The terminal just brought up another directory prompt. Nothing was reported.

Clearly, I've done something wrong but the intstructions seemed ultra-simple. Ideas on what I botched?[/quote]

Try and see if you can use ADB.
Do you have Developer Options and USB debugging enabled?
If so, reboot phone into normal mode and connect to Minimal ADB and Fastboot.
Type "adb devices" without the quotes and enter.
Should return with device ID.
Watch your phone screen, you should be prompted to allow.

If you get a return with your device ID with ADB,
Type "adb reboot bootloader" without the quotes and enter. Should reboot into bootloader mode then try the fastboot devices command again.

It looks like that worked like it's supposed to. Next step?

Look at the previous post where I had the link to Minimal ADB and Fastboot and follow the commands there

Two options factory rest or flash stock firmware.

Thank you both very much for your help, Jfalls and James. Once I found the post I missed, I followed your instructions and it worked perfectly. It now boots into the phone OS.

I tried the software update again and so far, it looks like it's going to work this time.

I do have a question, however.

This is the XT1625(single SIM variant) with 32GB. I looked around for custom ROMs and instructions but this seems to be the redheaded stepchild of Moto G4s as I couldn't find anything. Would either of you happen to know of a stock Nougat rom(or CMod) that would work on this phone?

And directly related to that, would this phone be terrible to do this on? I haven't swapped ROMs since I bought my HTC Incredible and I know a lot has changed. XDA is a bit daunting because you start the thread and think you're prepared but if you miss post 548 where things totally change due to later software or such, you can really mess up your phone, which I'm hoping not to do, for obvious reasons :)

I don't need more or different features, I just really hate the full screen ads and stuff. My daughter bought me the phone as a replacement for my 5x so I don't want to return it if possible, I'd just like to quietly get rid of those ads :)

Thank you both again for all the help you've provided. It's greatly appreciated!

I will do some research in the morning and post if I find anything interesting. Going offline soon.
At XDA, sometimes it's good to jump to the last few pages of a thread and read and see if things are still relevant.
Glad you got it to boot normally.

Thank you again. I just thought of something. I imagine there's an OEM moto ROM for the XT1625. Maybe it would be possible to flash Moto's version instead of Amazon's? I don't know if that's a thing but it just popped in my head.

Look forward to hearing from you tomorrow if you come up with anything!

If it's the Amazon version you could try and unlock the bootloader but I'm pretty sure they stopped supporting your model.

If it unlocks and has 6.0 root is a go. If it's 7.0 as of now it's a no go.

I do know the XT1621 can be rolled back to 6.0 from 7.0 since 7.0 doesn't have root for that model. Note: different model then the OP

It looks like a big negatory, Devildog:

Amazon Support said:
Me:My daughter purchased a Moto G4 XT1625 that is ad supported through eBay. The phone itself is very nice but the lock screen ads are terrible. Is there any way for me to pay the difference between the ad supported and non-ad supported model so that Amazon would turn the ads off?

You are now connected to Lavanyaa from Amazon.com
Lavanyaa:Hello Jason , my name is Lavanyaa. I'm here to help you today.
Me:Hello!

Lavanyaa: Could you please help me with the order number?

Me:It wasn't actually purchased through Amazon, she purchased it on eBay but the phone does show up in my devices list.

Lavanyaa:I've checked and see that we don't have option to remove the adds. In this case, you can return the item to the purchaser and can buy the add free mobiles.
I'm really sorry for the inconvenience caused, Jason.

Me:Thank you very much for your help. I hope the rest of your day is great.

Which is a bummer. I literally would rather use my daughter's old S3 mini from 2012 before using this one.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look into it further even though it didn't work out. I really appreciate it!

Hi there James,

Could you explain how a rollback of the version might be done if it's something that can be done? I am back to using my 5x for now and was going to see if this phone could be rolled back and then a new ROM installed before trying to return it.

Thanks for your time!
