How to transfer music to the device?

This may sound like a stupid question, but how does one transfer MP3s to the device? I thought, I connect the device in "disc mode" and then copy the files over, but when I did so I only got an error message that this device contains an unknown file system and needs to be formatted before it can be used.

Should I do that? Will it then work in "disk mode"? I would have guessed, that Android uses some *ix-like file system.

Strange enough, after quitting from the "Format?" question the sdcard became "invisible", i.e. even under android it disappeared. So, before reformatting it, I took it out of the device and inserted into a flash card reader and - fair enough - the content of the card became visible. And it's a simple FAT32 filesystem! So I copied some music into the MP3 folder and re-inserted the card into the Desire. And - surprise - it now reappeared in Android AND it's now working in "disk mode", too. So, apparently some initial "glitch"...
